The first of two Black Series 6" figures that I managed to get on Force Friday, Kylo Ren.
The packaging for the Black Series has been redesigned. It now features a larger character image on the front and a red backdrop for the figure. A short bio is printed on the back. The numbering has been reset and the cardboard used is smoother and shinier.
There's not much we know about Kylo Ren as yet. It's been said that he's not a Sith but someone who's strong with the Force. A Master he will meet who'll train him I'm guessing. He's dressed mostly in black. Like Darth Vader he wears a helmet and a mask. His attire is a combination of a plastic scarf and soft goods robes. The scarf is soft and flexible and has great sculpted detail. It is textured too. There's lots of folded material at the front and I like how it's frayed at the edges in some areas. He must have been wearing it for some time. The soft goods robes has a bit of quality to it. It looks thick and is patterned. The robes are a little too long and bunches up at the legs. The hood section is part of it. It does not sit well on his head and balloons to large circular shape once out of the package. It looks like he's wearing plastic tubing on his arms. They have nice sculpted detail though. He wears a thick belt. I like the design of the buckle.
A better look at his helmet. There's great sculpted detail on it. The silver paint was well applied, covering where it's supposed to and leaving the even black gaps. The top helmet portion has some dents on it suggesting he's been through some battles.
Underneath his robes is a samurai style "skirt" piece. The lines going across were all sculpted. The piece is black in colour but catches the light well giving it a shimmering appearance. What I like most about it is how flexible it is allowing for leg articulation. You'll see what I mean in just a bit.
Accessories. He comes with a lightsaber. As described on the back of the package it's unconventional. It has the cross guard. He probably built the lightsaber on his own. The blade is rough shall we say. It has fluctuations in it unlike the smooth blades of the Jedi and Sith we've seen. The blade appears like a stick of candle wax. The cross guard blades are connected to the main blade which should not be the case. They should come out from the sides separately. Like with previous lightsabers, the blade can be disconnected from the hilt.
His lightsaber has nice sculpted detail and good paint. There are scorch marks near the top further suggesting his lightsaber is not very stable.
Articulation. He's got a ball hinge neck, ball hinge shoulders, swivel hinge elbows, swivel and vertical hinge wrist hinge, mid torso joint, ball hips, thigh swivel, double jointed knees and ankle hinge and pivot. He can turn his head but is unable to look up or down due to the helmet and scarf. As mentioned, the flexible "skirt" piece allows for a good range of leg articulation.
Comparison shots. Kylo Ren and Darth Vader both have too much soft goods material about and look messy. I like Darth Maul for his neatness.
The figure is okay. I'm not sure how but I would like to see neater robes and soft goods attire. Thanks for viewing!
